On January 18, adidas officially launched the ACE 16+ Purecontrol after months of testing. This laceless football boot represents a major shift in boot design, though it is not the first attempt at removing laces. The evolution of materials has finally made a laceless upper viable.
The Laceless Concept: A Brief History
Back in 2003, Lotto introduced the Zhero Gravity, designed by Dennis Dekovic – a well-known designer who later moved from Nike to adidas. At the time, materials were not elastic enough to support a laceless construction, so the concept did not take off. By 2016, woven materials like Primeknit have become standard, allowing adidas to revisit and perfect the laceless design.

Why Remove the Laces?
Laces have remained unchanged for over a century, while every other part of the football boot has evolved. They create interference in the striking area – one of the most critical zones for ball contact. With modern elastic uppers, laces are no longer necessary for fit or adjustability, and removing them reduces weight, eliminates water absorption, and improves the look of the boot.

Primeknit: The Key Enabler
The Primeknit upper provides the elasticity needed to replace laces. The material in the former lacing area is designed to stretch, offering a snug fit without the need for tightening. This makes the boot lighter and creates a cleaner striking surface.

Putting the Boot On and Off
The laces area is left “naked” – not covered by the synthetic layer found elsewhere – to show the elasticity of the material. Two Pull elements help with putting the boot on and taking it off, though a shoehorn is still recommended.

New Outsole Design
The ACE 16+ Purecontrol features a redesigned outsole that adidas calls SprintFrame, complete with a heel counter attached to the outsole, a low-cut profile, and three stability elements in the bridge area. This replaces the ACE 15 outsole, which was not as well received by players who preferred the structure of previous generations. The new outsole uses conical studs – a shape previously found only on the Copa Mundial – which benefits control players who rely on stability during cuts and turns.

Aggressive New Aesthetics
The visual design moves away from the classic look of the ACE 15. A large adidas branding appears on the outside lateral, giving the boot a more aggressive appearance. This styling will also be applied to the rest of the ACE 16 line.

The adidas ACE 16+ Purecontrol is a true revolution in football boot technology, combining a laceless Primeknit upper with an updated SprintFrame outsole.
