adidas has released a special retro collection called the History Pack, featuring three iconic goalkeeper glove models from the 1980s and 1990s. These limited-edition gloves pay tribute to the legendary designs worn by Toni Schumacher, Oliver Kahn, and Fabien Barthez, combining classic aesthetics with modern performance updates.

ADIDAS ACE PRO ZONES 1982 – Toni Schumacher

In 1982, the FIFA World Cup was hosted by Spain. West Germany’s goalkeeper Harald “Toni” Schumacher wore adidas gloves with grey tones and a distinctive design for that era.

At the time, a one-piece latex backhand covering the center and fingers was common across most brands. This period marked a serious moment in goalkeeper glove evolution: latex was introduced for palms and backhands, representing a major advancement in the market.

The ACE Pro Zones 1982 retains the original look but does not maintain the same technical specifications of a glove from the 1980s, as that would not be adequate for modern play.

The once two-tone latex backhand has been modified with incorporated flexion lines to allow unrestricted hand movement. adidas has carefully updated the glove without altering its visual appearance.

33 years after the first latex glove was a success for adidas at the 1982 World Cup, the brand decided to bring it back for a special player: Iker Casillas. The Porto goalkeeper wore the new adidas ACE Pro Zones 1982 in his next Champions League match.

ADIDAS ACE PRO ZONES 1997 – Oliver Kahn

German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn was performing at his best when he signed with adidas after leaving Reusch. He was a regular starter for Bayern Munich and competed for the national team position with Andreas Köpke. As his popularity grew, adidas gave him an exclusive glove.

Kahn requested the glove to feature the same colors as his Bayern Munich goalkeeper shirt, matching the club’s shield colors. Although known for his aggressive style, the former Bayern goalkeeper always took care to look good for his club and country.

Of the three models in the History Pack, this one was historically the least significant. This may be why adidas focused on making it more visually appealing.

The glove features adidas bands with a special triangular outline and classic adidas typography on the index finger. The colorway was a success in 1997 and still looks impressive in 2015.

Manuel Neuer is the goalkeeper who will wear these gloves. He has already been seen wearing them and will defend for Bayern in the Champions League with the new adidas ACE Pro Zones 1997.

ADIDAS ACE PRO ZONES 1998 – Fabien Barthez

This last model is a personal favorite among many. Fabien Barthez was not necessarily the writer’s favorite goalkeeper but was one who captured attention due to his charisma, independent of his sporting achievements.

Barthez became more popular after the 1998 World Cup, wearing white gloves with large adidas bands on the backhand. Those gloves were only used during the World Cup and were not available to the public. In 1998, with limited internet access, many fans searched for them without success.

adidas has now included this glove in the History Pack. The retro model returns with a white base color on the backhand featuring the three adidas bands. The magic of the glove that helped France win the 1998 World Cup is back with the ACE Pro Zones.

This glove has a special decoration with a latex piece running across the backhand, providing a reinforced feel not seen in other ACE Pro Zones models. For those who like adidas gloves and seek a reinforced, powerful option, this model is worth considering.

Petr Cech is the goalkeeper who will wear these gloves. He was seen using them in his next Champions League match for Arsenal.
