The launch of a high-top boot by an American brand in 2014 pushed adidas to rethink its approach. Rather than following the trend, the German brand created the adizero F50 99g, the lightest football boot ever made. The new adidas X Ghosted marks a return to that era of speed-focused innovation, drawing direct inspiration from the lightweight F50 Adizero designs.
Heritage and Design Inspiration
The X Ghosted evokes the feel of the F50 Adizero, particularly the 99g boot, right down to the inverted adidas logo on the tongue. While the design is said to be inspired by the wings of the peregrine falcon – the fastest creature on earth – it clearly pays homage to the F50 line. Since the X silo was born from the F50, this launch brings the silo full circle.
Official Statement from adidas
Ben Herath, Vice President of Design at adidas Football, explained the thinking behind the boot: “When the sporting world slowed down last summer, the need for—and the pursuit of—speed did not. We saw athletes at all levels continue to push their limits. This only reaffirmed what we have always known: speed is as important as ever in football.”
“And why did we decide to focus on speed? Because that’s what our audience told us they wanted through focus groups in cities around the world. To give them what they wanted, we worked with our designers and drew inspiration from the world’s fastest athletes, introducing new innovations to create the X GHOSTED, one of the fastest boots we’ve ever made.”

The most significant speed-related advancement is the CARBITEX SPEEDFRAME. This dynamic carbon fibre plate efficiently transfers power through the SpeedFrame’s lightweight construction. The X Ghosted is the first football boot to feature an integrated dynamic carbon plate.
