When the All Whites face the Socceroos this week in the revived Soccer Ashes, they will take the pitch in a historic revival. PUMA and New Zealand Football have brought back the shirt that marked the nation’s first FIFA World Cup campaign in 1982 – this time as a match-ready strip.
The retro-inspired kit first appeared earlier this year during Oceania World Cup qualifying and sold out quickly on the NZF store, but never made it onto the field. Now it has moved from retail shelves to the pitch, as the All Whites prepare to wear it in the two-leg series against Australia.

Design Details
The design remains faithful to the 1982 original. The white home shirt features subtle pinstripes across the body, balanced with black trim on the collar, sleeves and cuffs. On the chest, the silver fern badge sits opposite PUMA’s branding, while the word Aotearoa is printed beneath the back collar – a small detail with significant meaning. The alternate shirt uses black as the base colour with white accents for a contrasting look.
A Cultural Callback
The 1982 side earned its place in New Zealand football folklore by reaching the World Cup for the first time. The current generation will channel that same spirit as they meet their oldest rivals.

The Soccer Ashes
The Soccer Ashes trophy dates back to 1923 and returns after decades of dormancy. The first match takes place at Canberra’s GIO Stadium on Friday 5 September (kick-off 9:45pm NZT / 7:45pm local), followed by the homecoming leg at Auckland’s Go Media Stadium on Tuesday 9 September (kick-off 7:00pm NZT). The All Whites also shared a post on Instagram highlighting the kit.
