Using Natural Grass footwear on Artificial Surfaces

Many soccer players and parents wonder whether footwear designed for natural grass can be safely used on artificial surfaces. With indoor and outdoor artificial fields becoming increasingly common, understanding the risks and proper footwear choices is essential for performance and safety.

The Short Answer: No

Using natural grass (firm ground, or FG) footwear on artificial surfaces is not recommended. A useful metaphor is the comparison with winter tires on summer roads. Winter tires will work but are not designed for the conditions, and they wear out much faster. Similarly, the long, aggressive studs found on FG boots are made of plastic. When used repeatedly on artificial turf made of rubber or sand, the plastic heats up, wears down, and can eventually shorten or even break.

Warranty and Sole Separation Risks

Using the wrong stud configuration on a given surface often voids any manufacturer guarantee. A common result is sole separation, where the bond between the plastic outsole and the upper material begins to detach. This usually occurs around the instep and front toe, the areas where most passing and shooting happen. It is the consumer’s responsibility to choose properly designed footwear by consulting knowledgeable staff or informational content from brands and retailers.

Safety Concerns on Artificial Surfaces

FG footwear outsoles and studs are designed for maximum grip on natural grass and soil. These studs tend to be longer, sharper, wider, and bladed or triangular in shape. On artificial surfaces, such aggressive studs can become lodged or stuck during a sudden direction change or a collision with another player. This increases the risk of injury to the knee, ankle, hip joints, ligaments, or muscles.

Why Many Players Still Use FG Boots

Despite these concerns, many players continue to use the wrong footwear on artificial surfaces. The main reason is the widespread availability of FG boots compared to the limited selection of artificial ground (AG) boots. Brands primarily market and manufacture FG models, leading to the common belief that these are the best boots to own and wear.

If You Must Use FG Boots on Artificial Turf

If you cannot find the correct model and must wear FG footwear on artificial ground, the least risky options are those with shorter studs and a round or circular shape. This design reduces the depth the stud can dig into the turf and allows easier rotation. However, using FG footwear on artificial surfaces is still not recommended.
