In Search of the Goalkeeper of the Future: Bilbao Trials Attract Over 400 Young Keepers

On 1 June 2019, the fourth round of the “In Search of the Goalkeeper of the Future” competition was held at the San Jorge football ground in Santurzi, Bilbao. More than 400 goalkeepers from across Spain gathered to test their skills in a trial led by top goalkeeping coaches, each assessing the participants’ abilities.

Expert Coaching Lineup

A stellar panel of 20 leading assessors, including former top‑flight professional goalkeeper Rubén Pérez, top‑flight goalkeeping coach Raúl Iglesias, and SD Eibar goalkeeping coach Rufino Lekue, evaluated the participants. These coaches are accustomed to training goalkeepers from the best youth academies in Spanish football and volunteered their time for the event organised by Futbol Emotion.

Technical Assessment and Selection Process

During the morning trials, the coaches assessed participants on specific technical aspects such as footwork, reaction speed, blocking, mobility, and positioning. The best performers in each category advanced to the afternoon session, where additional tests evaluated decision‑making, aerial play, and the determination of each goalkeeper. From this second phase, three winners were selected per category to compete in the final in Madrid on 22 June.

Prizes and Next Events

The competition featured goalkeepers from Under‑23s and youth teams vying for a year’s sponsorship from adidas and SP. In the senior category, three strong contenders are in line to sign for CD Lugo for the 2019–2020 season. The next trial takes place in Barcelona on 10 May, with more than 500 applicants already registered.
