Why Is International Goalkeeper Day on April 14?
The initiative was led by a glove manufacturer to pay tribute to Miguel Calero, the Colombian goalkeeper who passed away in 2012. Calero was born on April 14, and his birthday was chosen as the date for this international celebration.
Who Was Miguel Calero?
Known as “El Cóndor de los Andes,” Miguel Calero was a goalkeeper who combined passion, talent, and professionalism. He was famous for his adventurous style, often charging out of goal in the tradition of René Higuita. Over his career, Calero played approximately 950 matches across different leagues and participated in the Copa América. He became widely known for making Martín Palermo miss three penalties during a 3‑0 victory for Colombia over Argentina in the 1999 Copa América. Calero also scored goals—from midfield, from corners, and with his head.
In 2011, Calero suffered a venous thrombosis in his left arm and retired from football. His health deteriorated, and he passed away in December 2012. The news shocked Latin American football and led to the establishment of his birthday as International Goalkeeper Day.
