Interview with... Javi Montoya

Professional goalkeeper Javi Montoya shares his insights on pre-season preparation, the rise of specialised goalkeeper training, modern glove technology, and the equipment that shapes today’s goalkeeping world. In this interview, he reflects on his own development from youth football to training with Real Betis, and explains why specific camps for goalkeepers are vital for the position’s growth.

Pre-Season Setbacks and Physical Readiness

Pre-season has been intense, with the heat adding to the challenge. Montoya reports feeling good physically despite an early competitive match ending in defeat in Linares. “It hurt, but we have to pick ourselves up and keep going,” he says, acknowledging the demanding nature of the competition.

The Rise of Goalkeeper-Specific Training Camps

Montoya highlights the importance of dedicated goalkeeper camps, such as those organised at the academy he is involved with. He notes that goalkeeping has evolved significantly in recent years and that these camps are key to raising the profile of the position and encouraging young players. “I wish they had come along sooner,” he remarks, recalling that his early experiences were limited to competitive battles between goalkeepers rather than structured, specialised training.

How Goalkeeping Has Changed Over the Past Decade

Having witnessed the transformation from the inside, Montoya describes the evolution as natural. “The goalkeepers of ‘before’ have nothing to do with those of today in terms of technique and tactics,” he explains. While past keepers possessed undeniable natural talent, modern training places far greater emphasis on individual work, better working conditions, and vastly improved resources.

What to Look for in a Goalkeeper Glove

When choosing gloves, Montoya prioritises comfort, a compact yet lightweight feel, and a snug wrist fit for a firm grip. He also looks for latex that performs well in wet conditions, offers durability, and is white in colour.

Training Equipment: From Cones to Advanced Tools

The range of training equipment has grown enormously, but Montoya believes that good ball striking remains the most important element. He adapts to whatever equipment is available, but admits a strong dislike for dummies that block visibility. “I hate not being able to see the ball coming out or its trajectory being deflected,” he says.

A Goalkeeper’s Path to the Top

Montoya did not enter a youth academy as a child, but from the age of 13 or 14 he benefited from having a dedicated goalkeeper coach. He worked with Chiri at CD Berceo, then progressed through the youth, reserve, and first teams at Deportivo Alavés with Javi Barbero and Tito Subero. After a year at Barakaldo, he ended up training in the first division with Real Betis. He also recalls reaching the final of a goalkeeper competition in Logroño at age 16 or 17, held at the Pradoviejo sports complex.

Montoya concludes by affirming the special mentality shared by goalkeepers, which he believes helps them face many everyday challenges in life.
