Are There The Most Significant Boot Release Of All Time?

Introduction

Lionel Messi’s triumphant World Cup campaign with Argentina cemented his legacy as the greatest player in football history. His performances reached another level, producing unforgettable moments and proving he can do things others simply cannot. Alongside his on-pitch heroics, his footwear became a talking point of its own. Adidas unveiled a special edition of the Speedportal.1 called “Leyenda” just before the tournament began, and the boots have since become one of the most significant releases in football boot history.

The “Leyenda” Design and Features

The limited-edition boots were inspired by the adidas F30 boots Messi wore at the 2006 World Cup. Key features include:

  • A stretchy PRIMEKNIT collar for adaptive support, ultralight comfort, and ease of entry.
  • Construction using a series of recycled materials; the upper contains at least 50% recycled content.
  • A lightweight and flexible Speedframe outsole designed for effortless acceleration – perfectly suited to Messi’s style of play.

Limited pairs were released to retail and sold out extremely quickly at a launch price of $300.

Only a Handful of Game-Worn Pairs Exist

It is believed that Messi used only one or two pairs of the “Leyenda” boots throughout the entire World Cup. This makes those specific boots among the most significant ever seen. Placing a value on them is difficult given what they represent and the moments they helped create.

Additionally, Messi’s personal pair were modified to his own unique standards, as seen in up-close locker-room images before kick-off. Even though retail versions were released, the actual materials and styling differed from the signature pair Messi wore on the pitch. His game-worn boots are truly one of a kind – or, more accurately, about ten of a kind, depending on how many backup pairs Adidas provided.

Collectors’ Value of the Retail Release

The retail “Leyenda” boots that sold out have become even more invaluable. Owning a limited-edition replica of the boots Messi wore when he won his World Cup – at what could have been one of his last international tournaments – makes them an immediate collector’s item. With an original price of $300, resale demand is already high, and the value will only increase as more pairs disappear into private collections.

A Memorable Post-Game Gesture

After the final whistle, Messi was seen walking around the pitch without his cleats. Images later revealed that he had handed his boots to the person he trusts most – his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo. A fitting end to a historic tournament.
