The look is directly inspired by the 2001 Nike Air Zoom Mercurial VT, a boot that emerged from Nike’s internal “alpha project.” This initiative aimed to identify and solve performance issues in equipment used by elite athletes. The five dots that originally marked alpha project products are retained on the heel counter of this reissue.
The re-release replicates the exact colour scheme and detailing of the 2001 model, even colouring the Air Zoom area white, just like its predecessor. This design is applied to the current Nike Mercurial Vapor 15 Elite, creating one of the most distinctive looks in the Mercurial line.
