Nike has unveiled the latest generation of its iconic Mercurial football boots with the release of the Dragonfly colourway. Building on the success of the Mercurial Vapor XIII and Superfly VII from July 2019, this new iteration targets the top of the football boot market with a bold design and advanced technical features. The following breakdown covers the design, upper construction, and outsole innovations that define the Nike Mercurial Dragonfly.

This release introduces a disruptive aesthetic, characterised by a predominantly white upper and a bold, two-tone Swoosh on the outer sides. The colour combination signals a clear departure from previous generations, with an emphasis on contrast and visibility.

While white dominates the upper, other colours emerge through transparent construction. Yellow, purple, pink, and orange accents appear across the boot, particularly at the front. The Swooshes on the outer sides are larger and more prominent than those on the previous generation, playing a central role in the overall design.
Technical Features: Nike Mercurial Dragonfly
The new Mercurials retain a 360° construction but appear stiffer than their predecessors at first glance. This is deliberate: Nike has focused its development efforts on modernising the upper to boost performance. Flyknit is still present in the boot, but it has been removed from the heel area, contributing to the initial impression of stiffness.

The upper is built using two key technologies: Vaporsite Upper and Technical Componentized Upper.
Technical Componentized Upper
The Technical Componentized Upper combines four distinct materials, a first for Nike in this model. The design features distinctive holes running from the toe box to the heel counter, which improve breathability and reduce weight while maintaining stability.

The materials used are:
- Avail Q Lining Material and Titan Synthetic – These two materials work together to provide an optimal shape, improved waterproofing despite the holes, and excellent elasticity.
- Engineered Mesh – A durable material that enhances lightness and breathability while reducing overall weight.
- Duragon WT Skin – A new material that covers the entire upper, offering additional waterproofing without added weight and ensuring consistent grip when contacting the ball.
Sole
The outsole has undergone a significant update. While the previous generation addressed durability, stability, and grip, Nike has refined the design further.

The outsole retains a two-piece modular design (Aerotrak 2 Plate) but now connects both parts with a small bridge rather than keeping them separate. This improves grip during sprints and stops, as well as overall stability. A newly developed internal counter enhances the fit and helps prevent the boot from rolling over during play.
