The Nike Mercurial Superfly series has long been synonymous with speed. While the jump from the Superfly 7 to the Superfly 8 may look subtle, the change in upper materials marks a significant shift in design philosophy. This comparison examines how the new materials affect fit, touch, and overall performance.
Upper Construction: Flyknit vs VaporSite Upper

The Nike Mercurial Superfly 7 featured a plate made entirely from Flyknit. This delivered a spectacular, compressive fit with excellent grip for a speed boot. In the Superfly 8 (known as the Dragonfly), Flyknit is retained only in areas where its specialised fit is most needed: the ankle region and the lacing system.

The new VaporSite Upper and Technical Componentized Upper technologies form the heart of the Superfly 8. These combine four materials:
- Avail Q Lining Material
- Titan Synthetic
- Engineered Mesh (a weave of the synthetic material)
- Duragon WT Skin coating (provides waterproofing and ball grip)
The result is a thinner surface compared to the Superfly 7, bringing the player slightly closer to the ball. The construction also improves lateral movement support, reminiscent of the older Nike Mercurial Vapor XI.

Sole Plate Updates
The stud layout and shape remain unchanged from the Superfly 7. However, the Superfly 8 introduces a central strip that complements the existing Aerotrak design. This addition makes the sole plate stiffer and more responsive during starts, sprints, and twisting movements.

On-Pitch Feel and Target Audience
Despite using different upper materials, both versions offer a relatively similar feel once on the pitch. The Superfly 8 returns to the boot’s roots with a lightweight, mouldable synthetic upper. After a few wears, it softens and moves away from the sock-like comfort of the Flyknit. This shift creates a Mercurial that feels more like the classic speed-focused model of old.
At the same time, the change reinforces the identity of the Nike Phantom GT line, which retains Flyknit and appeals to players with slightly wider feet who had previously switched to the Mercurial for its glove-like fit.
