Oakland Roots 2025 Third Kit: Art Meets Football in Muzae Sesay Collaboration

Football, art, and culture converge as Oakland Roots SC unveils their 2025 third kit, created in partnership with CHARLY and acclaimed Oakland-based artist Muzae Sesay. The design draws directly from Sesay’s painting “The Sun Has Reached The Same Point As The Moon Above The Ocean” and was revealed at an exclusive launch event held inside the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), where the collaboration took center stage.

Design Inspired by Bay Waters

Sesay’s painting channels the rhythm, beauty, and mystery of Bay Area waters, and those same flowing currents are translated onto the jersey. Vibrant, undulating forms and deep colors bring Oakland’s energy to life across the shirt’s canvas. Inside the collar, the phrase “It’s in the water” anchors the design, reinforcing the deep bond between the local community and the coastline.

Artist and Club Perspectives

For Sesay—a practicing studio artist, football enthusiast, and longtime jersey collector—the project represents a meaningful convergence. “It’s my two biggest passions intersecting in a way I never expected,” he said. “My hope with this project is that it leads to greater interconnection between the art world and local sports, and also among all seemingly distant cultural communities—sustaining and nurturing the collaborative spirit of the Bay.”

Oakland Roots Chief Marketing Officer Edreece Arghandiwal echoed that sentiment. “Bay waters give much to us and never ask for anything back. There is a beauty in the water that connects The Bay, and it’s humbling to see this beautiful piece of art come together to tell that story.”

Kit Details and Construction

The shirt builds on an earlier collaboration between the club, SFMOMA, and Sesay that produced a limited capsule with Oaklandish, but this release reaches new heights. A woven Roots crest, embroidered CHARLY logo, and fully sublimated all-over artwork are combined in a lightweight, match-ready fabric with breathable mesh panels. The result is a jersey designed to work on the pitch, in a gallery, or on the streets.

Release and On-Pitch Debut

The kit will make its competitive debut on Tuesday, 7 October, when Oakland Roots host Hartford Athletic at the Coliseum. Fans can secure the jersey before that at a special release celebration on 2 October at SFMOMA’s Museum Store, or on game day at the Coliseum’s Dimes Gallery in Section 105, where Sesay’s artwork will be displayed throughout the match.
