Oakland Roots 2026 Kits: Myth, Movement, and the Spirit of The Town

Oakland Roots SC have unveiled their 2026 Primary and Secondary kits from Charly, drawing on local folklore, community identity, and artistic collaboration. The USL club continues to push creative boundaries with designs that blend hidden symbolism with bold cultural expression.
Primary Kit: “The Oak-ness Awakens”
The primary jersey is anchored in a longstanding local myth – the Oak-ness Monster, said to lurk beneath the surface of Lake Merritt. The design concept turns this urban legend into a metaphor for resilience and quiet strength.
“Oakland always tells its story through culture, creativity, and community,” said Chief Marketing Officer Edreece Arghandiwal. “This jersey is inspired by Lake Merritt and the belief that no matter what’s beneath the surface, something strong always rises. Honoring a place so vital to the spirit of The Town made this kit deeply personal.”

The shirt itself uses a deep matte black base overlaid with a gloss-black ripple pattern that mimics water movement. Hidden within those ripples is an abstract dragon-eel hybrid – the Oak-ness Monster – visible only in certain light. Silver detailing sharpens the crest, numbers and trim. The inner collar reads “Born of The Town” with the coordinates of Lake Merritt etched beneath.

The restrained execution means the shirt reads as a straightforward black kit from a distance, revealing its story up close. That subtlety aligns with the concept: a shirt about what lies beneath the surface does not give everything away at first glance.

Secondary Kit: “Mosaic in Motion”
If the primary kit lives in shadow, the secondary shirt steps into the light. “Mosaic in Motion” flips last season’s black base to white and leans into colour, culture and connection. A white base hosts a striking mosaic of geometric shapes, forming a kaleidoscope that symbolises diversity and unity. The full-colour crest pops against the lighter canvas, with subtle mosaic detailing on the collar and sleeves.

The design continues a visual language established over the past two seasons. Because it evolves directly from last season’s primary shirt, some may find it less immediately fresh, but as a standalone piece it remains bright, wearable, and rich with meaning – a celebration of Oakland’s multicultural soul.

Creative Direction and Animation
To launch the 2026 range, Oakland Roots partnered with Sun Creature Studio, the multi-award-winning and Oscar-nominated animation house.
“Collaborating on something that sits at the intersection of sport, fashion, and folklore is something that made us really excited,” the studio said. “Drawing from Oakland’s local mythology and energy, the animation is designed to be quick, impactful, and full of hidden details. It was a privilege to work with such a great team, and we can’t wait for the animation to take on a life of its own!”
The resulting animated short blends myth, community energy and modern animation into a cinematic piece that mirrors the duality at the heart of the club: shadow and light, grit and beauty, past and future.
Conclusion
While the 2026 primary and secondary kits may not reach the heights of last season’s standout third kit, the wider creative direction reinforces why Oakland Roots remain one of the most compelling clubs in American kit culture. The designs feel intentional, rooted, and unmistakably Oakland – whether through hidden monsters beneath matte-black ripples or mosaics bursting into morning light.
