The adidas Copa football boot line underwent its most radical transformation in late 2018 with the launch of a completely reinvented version of the iconic Copa Mundial. Since then, the range received only a minor design refresh with the Copa 20 in early 2020. Now, exclusive images from an Argentina national team training session show Juventus star Paulo Dybala wearing what appears to be the next generation of the Copa, signalling a significant update is on the horizon.

Key Design Changes Spotted on Dybala’s Boots
While the overall silhouette remains recognisably Copa, the new prototype displays several notable alterations to the upper and soleplate.
Simplified Forefoot and Laceless Construction
The high-end version retains a laceless build, but the forefoot area is now completely free of any additional elements. The most heavily padded section of the previous model has also been removed, resulting in a cleaner, more streamlined look.

Revised Side Panels and Heel Collar
The sides feature an undulating design similar to the outgoing version, but the pattern now runs from the heel all the way to the forefoot, giving a slightly different visual flow. The collar area has also been redesigned with a new heel collar shape.
Modified Outsole and Heel Counter
Evidence from the images suggests further changes to both the outsole and midsole. A slightly larger external heel counter appears to be present compared to the current model. It is highly likely that this prototype is not the final retail version and may undergo additional revisions before release.

What This Means for the Next Copa Release
The appearance of this prototype on Paulo Dybala confirms that adidas is actively developing a new iteration of the Copa line. The combination of a stripped-back forefoot, revised side design, and updated heel and soleplate points to a meaningful evolution rather than a simple colour update. Further updates on the new adidas Copa are expected as testing continues.
