The bright pink Puma LaLiga 1 ball, introduced for the winter months, has been “semi-retired” following a single weekend of use. Both stadium-goers and television viewers complained that the design made the ball too difficult to follow during play.
LaLiga and Puma Respond to Visibility Concerns
In an official statement, LaLiga and Puma confirmed that the new pink ball had been used across all LaLiga Santander and LaLiga Smartbank stadiums for the first time on the latest matchday. They explained that from now on, the ball will only be deployed when adverse weather conditions reduce visibility — a move that was foreseen from the outset.
A Quick Reversal to Protect Player and Viewer Experience
The decision to scale back the ball’s use so soon after its launch is unusual, but it allows both the league and the manufacturer to avoid a potentially damaging situation. For the time being, matches will revert to the standard PUMA La Liga 1 FIFA Quality Pro ball.
What to Expect Going Forward
The pink hi-vis ball is expected to return to Spanish pitches only when severe weather significantly affects visibility. Whether that approach proves successful remains to be seen.
