Design Details
The jersey features multiple shades of violet as the primary colour, with black used for all key details. The Real Madrid crest, adidas logo, and sponsor branding are rendered in black. The classic adidas three stripes also appear in black on the shoulders, while the sleeve edges and round neckline are trimmed in the same dark shade.
A pattern of geometric shapes covers both the front and back of the shirt. Completing the away kit are shorts and socks that are entirely lilac, accented with black details.
Why Purple Appears in Real Madrid’s Kits
Purple has appeared in at least one Real Madrid kit for many seasons, but the reason behind its use is not widely known. The colour traces back to 1931, when the Second Republic was established in Spain. That political shift brought several changes to the club:
- Madrid had to drop the prefix “Real” (Royal) from its name, only regaining it years later.
- The crown was removed from the official crest.
- A horizontal purple stripe was added to the kit.
The origin of that purple stripe remains unclear. Some believe it was politically motivated, while others claim it represented the historic region of Castile. No definitive explanation has ever been confirmed.
The Colour’s Legacy and Later Change
Despite the uncertainty, purple became a symbol of the club for many years and appeared regularly on Real Madrid’s kits. It was not until the 1997/98 season, under president Lorenzo Sanz, that the purple stripe was replaced with blue – the colour still used today.
