The adidas Nemeziz football boot was introduced in 2017 as a new agile design developed around the playing style of Lionel Messi. Inspired by the functional support bandages used in boxing and ballet, the boot aimed to provide greater support, agility, and speed for players who rely on quick changes of direction.
2017: The First Nemeziz and the Agilitybandage
The original Nemeziz featured the Agilitybandage technology, which wrapped the foot 360 degrees for a close, supportive fit. This laceless version offered excellent touch and a medium-traction sole suited to constant direction changes and high-speed turns. The design marked the end of the old Messi signature boots and introduced a concept that was widely praised by those who tried it.

2018: Refinements to the Lacing System
The first update retained the wrapping-lacing concept but introduced several improvements. The material at the toe box was softened for a lighter feel when striking the ball. The collar height was raised to eliminate the uncomfortable pressure point on the heel that some users experienced in the previous version. An internal mesh layer was added to enhance comfort. The sole, featuring the Torsionframe system, remained unchanged. While the update was an improvement, the new forefoot offered slightly less grip than the original, which could be an issue in wet conditions.

2019: A Radical Evolution
In 2019, adidas introduced a more substantial redesign. The Agilitybandage now wrapped completely around the heel, and a new modular outsole was developed to make direction changes even easier. The fit shifted from a side-contoured design to a centre-based construction, improving foot lockdown and support during lateral movements. Inside, silicone inserts at the heel, an internal mesh lining, and new semi-conical studs on the sole added comfort and traction. This evolution laid the foundation for the current Nemeziz model.

2020: Improved Grip
The 2020 update focused on a key weakness: grip. A textured layer was added to the synthetic upper on both the front and sides, improving ball control while retaining the comfortable fit and overall design that professionals valued.

The Legacy of the Nemeziz
The adidas Nemeziz had a relatively brief but impactful history, producing memorable moments on the feet of its greatest exponent, Lionel Messi. With the arrival of his return to new footwear, the future of Messi’s boots remains to be seen.
