1968 – The Birth of Blue Ribbon Sports

Nike was founded by Phil Knight in 1968 under the original name “Blue Ribbon Sports” (BRS). The brand had not yet adopted the name that would become synonymous with athletic excellence.

Early 1971 – A New Name: NIKE

The “Blue Ribbon Sports” name lacked sufficient appeal, prompting Phil Knight to consider a change. Jeff Johnson, the company’s first employee, suggested the name NIKE – a reference to the Greek goddess of Victory, depicted as a winged young woman running at great speed.

Spring 1971 – Designing the Swoosh

The real challenge for Phil Knight was creating a logo that could match the symbolic power of Adidas’ three stripes. Nike’s small board of directors assigned the task to 35 graphic designers, ultimately selecting Carolyn Davidson, a design student at Portland State University.

The brief was demanding: produce a brand mark that would surpass the Adidas stripes. Design proposals were inspired by the wings of the Greek goddess. Davidson presented her work to Knight and the NIKE team – Jeff Johnson and Bob Woodell – who chose the iconic image now known worldwide, though not without controversy.

Knight wanted a design that conveyed movement. Initially, he was not in favour of the logo, but with boxes waiting to be printed and no time left to revise, he accepted it with the words: “I’m not in love with the logo, but I’ll get used to it.”

1972 – The Designer’s Fee

Once the logo was officially adopted, Carolyn Davidson was paid for her work. At $2 per hour, and given the short timeframe, her total compensation amounted to $35 – a reasonable sum for a design student at the time.

1982 – A Surprising Bonus

Ten years after the logo’s creation, Phil Knight contacted Carolyn Davidson to thank her. He presented her with a gold and diamond ring featuring the logo, along with a diploma and an envelope full of Nike shares.

The exact number of shares remains a closely guarded secret between Knight and Davidson. “The shares were split three times since I received them, so I can definitely say that I have been very well compensated for my design,” Davidson remarked. “You have to remember also that this was something special enough for Phil to do, because I billed him and he paid that bill.” Davidson retired in 2000 to pursue hobbies and volunteer work in hospitals.

1985 – A Coloured Background

In 1985, the logo began appearing on a coloured background. This was a small variation driven more by brand image than by any fundamental evolution of the logo itself.

The 21st Century – The Swoosh Stands Alone

The NIKE Swoosh has become so popular and iconic worldwide that the brand can now remove the NIKE lettering and display only the symbol. This is how the logo appears today on all of the American brand’s apparel and advertising promotions.

Beyond its visual identity, Nike has produced powerful advertising campaigns across every sport it touches. One of its most representative phrases – and one that clearly encapsulates the brand’s ethos – is “JUST DO IT.” This slogan motivates people to keep moving and always go forward, a principle Nike itself has never stopped following.
