Vans, an icon for generations

From the skate parks of California to everyday street style, Vans has become one of the most recognizable footwear brands in the world. The story begins in 1966 when the Van Doren brothers opened a small rubber company in Anaheim, creating a shoe that would resonate across generations. This article traces the key milestones that turned Vans into a lasting lifestyle icon.

The Birth of Vans: 1966 and the Authentic

On March 16, 1966, brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren, together with Gordon Lee and Serge Delia, opened the Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, California.

The very first sneakers produced were the Vans Authentic, originally called the #44 Deck. This model quickly became a favorite among skaters on the West Coast of the United States.

What made the Authentic so special were its solid construction and soles that gripped the skateboard deck perfectly. It was the skate community that drove the brand’s early success and gave it the name “Vans” — a shortened version of the founders’ surname.

The Era: Collaboration with Skate Legends

Vans soon gained popularity among young people, leading to a partnership with two of the most famous skaters of the time: Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta. Together they redesigned the Authentic to create the Vans Era — a model with a padded collar and multiple color combinations that quickly became the iconic skate shoe.

The Slogan “Off the Wall”

In 1976, Vans adopted the slogan “Off the Wall,” a phrase that would define a generation of skaters and sneaker enthusiasts.

The Old Skool and the Side Stripe

In 1977, following the success of the Era, Vans introduced a new model: the Old Skool. These shoes featured a distinctive side stripe, originally conceived as a doodle to be placed on the shoe. In a short time, that stripe became the hallmark of the Vans brand.

Expanding the Line: Sk8-Hi and Slip-On

In the years that followed, Vans created the Sk8-Hi and the Slip-On as alternatives to the Authentic. These new models pushed the brand even further, cementing Vans as the most famous footwear choice for skaters and new generations alike.
