Iker Casillas’s move to FC Porto brought more than just a change of shirt – it revealed a series of unusual details about his goalkeeper gloves. After a short break from football, we take a closer look at the modifications Casillas has been wearing during his first training sessions and pre-season matches with the Portuguese club.
The Exclusive adidas Ace Zones Pro
Adidas had prepared a special edition glove for Casillas, the adidas Ace Zones Pro, which he was expected to wear during his final days at Real Madrid. The question was whether he would continue to use that exclusive model at Porto.

In his first training session, Casillas was already wearing the exclusive model. However, the team staff seemed unaware of some of his personal preferences. The most noticeable was his choice to wear a long-sleeve jersey – unusual for Casillas, especially during summer training. That long sleeve hid a secret about his gloves, which later became visible when he switched to a three-quarter sleeve jersey.

The Unusual Strap Fastening
Look closely at the images above. The classic adidas double-lap strap fastening in the wrist area appears unusual. From different angles, the fastening looks too long, with a section that is not properly attached to the wrist.

In this photo, Casillas is wearing the synthetic version of the adidas ACE 15, apparently without any other modifications.
Why the Modification?
The likely reason is one of the small customisations Casillas requests for his gloves: a strap fastening with only one lap instead of the standard two. If adidas miscalculated the length by just a couple of centimetres – and considering that Casillas does not wear bandages on his wrists – the extra length would be enough to cause the loose fastening seen in the photos. This appears to be an emergency solution until a proper version arrives.

The Painted Latex Base
Another modification involves the rubber piece at the base of the palm. It is made of latex but painted black. As Casillas prefers to wear well-used gloves, the paint quickly falls apart with use, revealing the latex underneath.
